It's All About Relationships

That's what thousands of educators, law enforcement, youth-serving advocates and other professionals in thirty-eight states and Canada have learned for twenty years from Garrison Associates to describe how authentic educational institution safety and security is achieved.

The pressures on today's educators and youth-serving professionals to provide more with less are enormous. During a time of increased expectation for student and staff safety, turning to expedience rather than experience has proved for some to be a costly error.

While schools have made progress in school safety since the Columbine incident, judging the effectiveness of security products and programs in reducing school accidents and incidents remains difficult. One measure usually not addressed by security consultants and vendors is student achievement.  Students learn and teachers teach best in a supportive and safe environment reinforced daily through consistently strong relationships.

Continuing accidents and incidents compromising the safety of school children and staff are overwhelmingly caused by weak relationships resulting in crime, violence and negligence. Garrison Associates recognizes the principal role relationship plays between:

  • Student and student
  • Staff and student
  • Staff and staff
  • Student and parents/community
  • Staff and professionals from outside agencies
  • Student and staff policies, procedures and practices
  • Staff and technology
  • Socio-economic status and violence

Cognitive Academic Behavioral Proficiency (CAB-P)

Mr. Garrison is the originator of the Cognitive Academic Behavioral Proficiency© (CAB-P) classroom management program. This unique classroom management approach trains teachers on the importance of establishing a safe academic culture in an era of accountability. Cognitive Academic Behavioral Proficiency creates a professional learning community plan at your school site by emphasizing student learning within the context of a consistently-applied academic culture reinforced through explicit teacher behaviors.

A Trainer of Trainers

Over our twenty-year history, Garrison Associates has trained thousands of educators and youth-serving professionals as well as individuals currently in the field of school safety and security. During that time, one consistent message was emphasized: The goal of an effective school safety and security plan is to increase relationships, not suspicion. Accidents and incidents in educational institutions can be reduced if the quality of safe relationships are enhanced through awareness and the consistent application of policies, procedures and practices.

Praise for Garrison Associates

"Your week in Fairbanks has had a terrific impact on our community. The concept of a school safety plan, developed by representatives of all child service agencies is a sure thing...we look for your return." - Jerry Hartsock, Asst. Superintendent

"We heard wonderful feedback about your training sessions." - Nancy Weiss, Baltimore, MD

"My sincere appreciation for your time and efforts in delivering training to our School Resource Officers Program. Your material was informative and well received. The students were pleased with the vast amount of information you were able to share." - W.R. Steverson, Training Coordinator, FL

"Your workshops on cults, gangs and school safety touched faculty representing 15 of our 75 schools; on-site visits touched another 12. Word is spreading that you are not only a dynamic speaker, but that you are one of those rare individuals who understands the realities that face Catholic schools." - Father Joseph Merkt, Louisville, KY

School Security Technology

Despite the pressures to install the latest security hardware or software, Garrison Associates believes that relationships, not technology, form the basis of authentic security. Security technology is a tool, not a panacea. Often the weakest link in the application of technology-based school security is the people charged with the responsibility of maintaining, monitoring and manipulating the information received.

Establishing a comprehensive school safety plan prior to the procurement of security technology is the best way to achieve effective school safety and security. Garrison Associates will provide staff, parents and your community with strategies to consistently follow school safety policies and protocols that are part of your school safety and security plan.
